Sun, Moon, & Stars
I don’t know if it started with stained-glass windows or worship music, but I’ve always found it easy to visualize God’s spirit in nature. We sang about cloudless skies and mountaintops, laying our burdens down by the river, and trusting God through storms. We sang of God’s handiwork in the sun, moon, stars, and all of creation including plants, animals and people. It was easy for me to embrace a core foundational belief that nature is a gift from God. For me, science and faith go hand in hand. The artist in me loves the variety of shapes and shades of light and colors, while the theologian in me treasures this gift from a gracious God. Weaving all these strands of information, history, knowledge and belief makes the tapestry of life and nature more marvelous. Pulling one strand out of the tapestry and proclaiming that this is all the truth there is, seems like an attempt to make God and life smaller for personal gain, comfort and comprehension.
