Outdoor Altars

While sorting images for my recent book, I came across a folder that was simply labeled “prayer;” in it I found the first four photographs of this section. They remind me of times that I sat in a sanctuary and viewed the altar area in a spirit of prayer, directing my thoughts from myself to God and others. Likewise, the natural arrangement of water, rocks, light and trees in these scenes redirects my attention to God and others. I call them “outdoor altars.”
